We Believe Sports are Important
Kids have many influences in their lives that shape their character. Peer pressure, television, movies, and video games all affect and develop a child’s character at a very early age.
Sports teaches kids leadership, teamwork, goal setting, and also instils confidence and discipline. It also attracts them away from sedentary activities such as TV and video games and protects them from negative influences on the streets. Sports gets them off the couch and into a fun atmosphere that teaches many life lessons. It also provides a platform for exercise that many kids lack in today’s coach-potato world.
Below are excerpts taken from a Daily Oklahoman article titled “Before they were famous.” We couldn’t have said this any better!
“I believe that athletics was a terrific foundation for business. …No one remembers who is in second place. “How sports led to success: ‘Taught me how to compete, that you will get out of somethings that you are willing to put into it. The will to win is not as important as the will to prepare.” -Mayor Mick Cornett
“I learned that with any position comes accountability. And that you can’t quit just because you’re failing. You just have to come up with a new plan.” -Linda Cavanaugh, KFOR News Anchor
“To me, athletics are a microcosm of life: You win some, and you lose some. How one handles victories and defeats can define who they are and how they will handle life’s ups and downs.”-Rick Mitchell, KOCO Meteorologist
“I attribute so much of my work ethic to sports. I was taught such a strong sense of pride in hard work, perseverance, and an unwillingness to give up. As an actor in New York, nothing helps me more than those things.” -Kelli O’Hara, Broadway Actress
“Academics are critical to a bright future, but I think athletics help build character and instill discipline.” -Governor Brad Henry
