Bands battle for skate park

Posted in Other Sports on December 22nd, 2009 by Laura – 1 Comment

The Skatepark Committee got a little closer to their fundraising goal Friday night, pulling in about $450 with a Battle of the Bands event held at the community center.

Five bands took the stage Friday, with first prize (a $75 gift certificate to Sweet Fordy’s) going to Kingston-based HumBeLeaf and second prize ($50 Sweet Fordy’s certificate) going to Boston-based Emma Ate the Lion.

The winner was decided by who got the loudest round of applause, according to Skatepark Committee member Donna Cannone.

The fundraiser brought the group’s collection to close to $37,000. They’re hoping to raise a total of between $100,000 and $150,000 to build the skate and BMX park.

In September, selectmen voted to allow the group to build their park behind the community center, where a playground is now. The playground equipment will be relocated down the hill near the baseball field.
